Why Visit Changdeokgung in Autumn?
Built in 1405 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, Changdeokgung was the Joseon kings’ favorite residence because its buildings follow the natural slopes of the hills instead of a rigid grid. Behind the halls lies Huwon (the Secret Garden), a wooded royal garden with lotus ponds, pavilions and old trees — and autumn is when it looks its best.
- Foliage timing 2026: The 2026 foliage map from the Korea Tourism Organization and the Korea National Arboretum puts the Seoul metropolitan area’s peak from late October (Financial News, Oct 8, 2026). Inside the palace, colors usually look best from the last days of October through mid-November.
- Free palace admission: According to a local guide published in October 2026, general admission to the four main palaces, Jongmyo and the royal tombs is free from October 29 to November 15, 2026 during the Korea Grand Festival period. Huwon (Secret Garden) tours are not included and still cost ₩5,000. Check the official Royal Palaces site before you go.
- Comfortable weather: Late October and early November bring clear skies and daytime temperatures of roughly 10–18°C — ideal for the hilly 90-minute garden walk.
How to Get to Changdeokgung from Central Seoul
- Subway: Line 3 to Anguk Station, Exit 3, then walk about 5 minutes east along Yulgok-ro to Donhwamun, the main gate (99 Yulgok-ro, Jongno-gu).
- Alternative: Jongno 3-ga Station (Lines 1, 3, 5), Exit 6/7, about 10 minutes’ walk north.
- Fare: Seoul subway base fare is ₩1,550 with a T-money card (about $1.20); from Myeongdong or Hongdae the ride takes about 15–30 minutes.
- Timing tip: The walk from Donhwamun to the Secret Garden entrance takes 15+ minutes, so arrive at the palace at least 20 minutes before your tour time.
