Songnisan in Autumn: Best Trip from Seoul 2026

Songnisan in autumn — hikers on a forest path under red and orange leaves

Songnisan in autumn is one of the most rewarding trips you can take from Seoul in late October. In under three hours by express bus you reach a national park where maple-lined forest paths lead to Beopjusa, a 1,400-year-old UNESCO-listed temple with Korea’s only surviving five-story wooden pagoda. This guide covers the 2026 foliage timing, how to get there, what it costs, a one-day itinerary, nearby sights and restaurants, and practical tips.

Why Visit Songnisan in Autumn (2026 Timing)

Songnisan (“the mountain that leaves the secular world behind”) straddles Chungcheongbuk-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do in the center of the peninsula. Its lower valleys are full of Korean maples, oaks and ginkgo, so the colors around Beopjusa and along the flat Sejo-gil trail are some of the most accessible in Korea. The Korea Forest Service’s 2026 foliage forecast map puts the Songnisan peak around October 28, 2026 (peak = more than 50% of leaves turned; Vegan News, Sept 30, 2026). In practice, the last week of October and the first days of November are the golden window, and weekends are busy.

Another seasonal bonus: Boeun County, where Songnisan sits, is Korea’s jujube capital. The 2026 Boeun Jujube Festival ran October 16–25, and fresh and dried jujubes are still sold at stalls near the park entrance into November.

Book on the T-money Bus or Bustago app, especially for the return bus on weekends. From Songnisan Terminal it is about a 10–15 minute walk past the restaurant street to the park entrance, and roughly 1 km more on a forest path to Beopjusa. Schedules come from the intercity bus timetable updated October 22, 2026; always double-check before you travel.

By car: about 3 hours from Seoul via the Jungbu Naeryuk or Cheongju-Yeongdeok expressways. The paid lot at the Beopjusa entrance charges about ₩5,000 per day for a small car.

Suggested One-Day Itinerary

  1. 07:30 — Express bus from Dong Seoul (arrive Songnisan Terminal about 10:19).
  2. 10:30 — Walk through the park gate and the Ojiri forest path to Beopjusa: Palsangjeon pagoda, the 33-meter golden Maitreya Buddha, and the stone lotus basin.
  3. 11:30 — Stroll the flat Sejo-gil trail along the reservoir and stream toward Sesimjeong — the best foliage on the mountain with almost no climbing.
  4. 13:00 — Lunch of sanchae (wild mountain vegetable) bibimbap or a hanjeongsik spread on the restaurant street.
  5. 14:30 — Taxi or short ride to the Jeongipumsong pine for photos; buy jujubes on the way back.
  6. 15:20 or 16:20 — Bus back to Dong Seoul (arrive about 18:42 / 19:42).

Hikers: take the first bus and climb to Munjangdae instead of lunch in the valley. From Sesimjeong it is about 6.6 km round trip (roughly 3.5 hours) via Ipseokdae and Gyeongeopdae, so you can still catch the 16:20 bus if you keep moving.

Named after King Sejo of Joseon, who is said to have visited Songnisan to recover his health, this gentle dirt path follows a stream and reservoir for about 4 km from the Beopjusa entrance area to Sesimjeong. It suits all ages and is the best way to see the autumn colors without a real hike.

Jeongipumsong Pine Tree

This roughly 600-year-old pine on the road into the park is Natural Monument No. 103. Legend says it lifted its branches so King Sejo’s palanquin could pass in 1464, and the grateful king granted it the rank of a senior government minister (jeongipum).
