Just an hour from Seoul, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress lets you walk on top of a 230-year-old royal fortress wall that circles a whole city center. It is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Seoul, with history, city views and some of Korea's best grilled beef ribs at the end of the walk.
The story of Hwaseong Fortress
King Jeongjo, the 22nd king of the Joseon Dynasty, built Hwaseong between 1794 and 1796 to honor his father, Crown Prince Sado. The scholar-architect Jeong Yak-yong used new techniques, including the geojunggi crane, to finish the 5.7 km wall in under three years. After damage in the Korean War, it was rebuilt almost exactly using the detailed royal construction record, and UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1997.

Where to eat near Hwaseong Fortress
Suwon is famous for two things: galbi (marinated beef ribs) and fried chicken.
- Yeonpo Galbi (연포갈비): a long-standing galbi house near Hwahongmun. Try the galbitang (short-rib soup) or grilled Suwon galbi.
- Jinmi Tongdak (진미통닭): old-style whole fried chicken on Suwon's Chicken Street next to Paldalmun.
- Yongseong Tongdak (용성통닭): another Chicken Street favorite. Order 'ban-ban' (half fried, half seasoned).
- Boyoung Mandu (보영만두): a local favorite near Janganmun for pan-fried dumplings and spicy chewy jjolmyeon noodles.
