Gyeongju Guide: Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae & Wolji Pond

Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla Kingdom for almost 1,000 years, and its old center is often called a 'museum without walls'. The best part? Three of its most famous sights, Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae and Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond, sit within walking distance of each other, so you can see them all in one beautiful evening.

What you will see

Daereungwon Tomb Complex & Hwangnidan-gil

Daereungwon is a park of 23 grassy royal burial mounds from the Silla era. Cheonmachong (the Heavenly Horse Tomb) is the only one you can walk inside; the famous Silla gold crown was found here. The park has been free since May 2023. Right next door, Hwangnidan-gil is one of Korea's trendiest streets, full of hanok cafes, bakeries and small shops.

Cheomseongdae Observatory

Built in the 7th century during Queen Seondeok's reign, this stone tower is considered the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in East Asia. The fields around it bloom with seasonal flowers, and it is lit up at night.

Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond

Built after Silla unified the Three Kingdoms (the pond was dug in 674), this was a royal palace and banquet pond. Its rebuilt pavilions glow at night and reflect perfectly on the water, making it one of the most photographed night views in Korea.

How to get to Gyeongju from Seoul

Option 1: KTX + city bus

  1. Take a KTX from Seoul Station to Gyeongju Station (formerly Singyeongju): about 2 hours 10 minutes, about KRW 49,300.
  2. From the bus stops in front of the station, take a city bus heading downtown (for example bus 50, 60, 61, 70 or 700) toward the Express/Intercity Bus Terminal area, about 30–40 minutes.
  3. Walk 10–15 minutes to Daereungwon. Cheomseongdae is another 10 minutes on foot, and Wolji Pond 10–15 minutes beyond that.

Option 2: SRT from Suseo

From Suseo Station in Gangnam, the SRT reaches Gyeongju Station in about 2 hours 5 minutes (about KRW 42,600).

Option 3: Express bus (drops you downtown)

Buses from Seoul Express Bus Terminal reach Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal in about 3 hours 45 minutes (from about KRW 22,700). The terminal is downtown, so Daereungwon is only a 10–15 minute walk with no local bus needed.

Where to eat

  • Hwangnam-ppang (황남빵): Gyeongju's famous red bean pastry, made since 1939. The perfect souvenir.
  • Ssambap Street by Daereungwon (e.g., Jeongrok Ssambap 정록쌈밥): rice and meat wrapped in many kinds of fresh greens with lots of side dishes.
  • Gyori Gimbap (교리김밥): a Gyeongju icon, gimbap packed with thin egg strips.
  • Dosol Maeul (도솔마을): home-style Korean set meals in a hanok in Hwangnidan-gil.
  • Gyeongju Wonjo Kongguk (경주원조콩국): warm soybean-milk soup, a beloved local snack near Cheomseongdae.
