Naejangsan Autumn Foliage 2026: Best Day Trip from Seoul

Naejangsan Autumn Foliage 2026: Best Day Trip from Seoul

Naejangsan autumn foliage is the most famous fall color show in Korea. Koreans even have a saying: “Spring is Jirisan, autumn is Naejangsan.” The park sits in Jeongeup, North Jeolla, and its maples turn some of the deepest reds in the country. Better still, the KTX makes it an easy day trip from Seoul. In this guide, you will find the 2026 peak dates, transport and fares, a cost table, a one-day plan and where to eat nearby.

Why Naejangsan Autumn Foliage Is Worth the Trip

Naejangsan is home to about 11 species of maple, more than almost anywhere in Korea. As a result, the slopes turn every shade from gold to crimson. The highlight is the Maple Tunnel — a road lined with 108 maple trees running from the Iljumun gate to Naejangsa Temple — and the photogenic Uhwajeong Pavilion, reflected in a small pond below the ridge. In addition, the park is one of the southernmost big foliage spots. Because of this, Naejangsan autumn foliage peaks later than Seoraksan, which gives you a second chance if you missed the north.

  • 2026 forecast: peak foliage around November 4 (Korea Forest Service forecast; Seoraksan peaks around October 20).
  • Best window: roughly October 28 – November 10. Colors at lower elevations (the Maple Tunnel) often last into mid-November.
  • Reservation trail: the Seoraebong section (Seorae Visitor Center → Byeongnyeonam, 2.8 km) requires a free online booking from October 18 to November 16, limited to 520 hikers a day.

How to Get to Naejangsan from Seoul

By KTX (recommended)

  • Route: Yongsan Station (or Suseo by SRT) → Jeongeup Station, Honam High-Speed Line.
  • Time: about 1 hr 30 min – 1 hr 50 min; around 27 KTX trains a day from Yongsan (first ~05:08, last ~20:09).
  • Fare: ₩35,200 one way, standard class (ITX-Saemaeul ₩27,900; Mugunghwa ₩18,800, about 3–4 hours).
  • Jeongeup Station → park: city bus 171 to the Naejangsan terminal (about 30–40 min, around ₩1,500; buses are infrequent) or a taxi (about 20–25 min, roughly ₩20,000). Door-to-door from Yongsan takes about 2 hr 20 min.

By express bus

Buses run from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Central City) to Jeongeup in about 3 hours, but autumn weekend traffic on the expressway can add a lot of time. The train is faster and more predictable during foliage season.

By car

During peak season (late October to mid-November) private cars are restricted inside the park. Park at the outer lots (Lot 4 at Naejang Lake is free; Lots 1–3 about ₩5,000) and take the free shuttle bus toward Wollyeonggyo Bridge. In 2025 the shuttle ran October 25 – November 16; check the 2026 dates with Jeongeup City before you go.
