Series: Trending Korean MZ Snacks · #1 Butter Tteok · #2
Korean fruit mochi (과일 찹쌀떡, gwail chapssal-tteok) is autumn 2026’s must-have snack in Seoul. Imagine a soft, chewy rice cake wrapped around a whole piece of fresh fruit—strawberry, Shine Muscat grape, tangerine, persimmon or fig—often with red bean paste or yogurt cream. Young Koreans are queuing for hours to buy it, and department stores are opening new branches to attract them. Here’s what Korean fruit mochi is, how much it costs, why the MZ generation loves it, and three shops in Seoul to try.
What Is Korean Fruit Mochi?
Chapssal-tteok is Korea’s traditional glutinous rice cake filled with sweet red bean paste. The fruit version adds a whole piece of fresh fruit inside, similar to Japan’s strawberry daifuku. In 2026, Korean shops have pushed the idea further with seasonal fruit, yogurt cream, pistachio, chocolate and even crunchy kadaif fillings (Segye Ilbo, October 2026). When you cut one in half, the bright cross-section of fruit, cream and white rice cake is what makes it so photogenic.

Why Korea’s MZ Generation Loves Fruit Mochi
- Texture plus freshness. Chewy rice cake, juicy fruit and smooth cream deliver several textures in one bite—the same “two sensations at once” pattern that defines 2026’s hit desserts (Sometrend).
- Made for Instagram. The fruit cross-section photographs beautifully. Segye Ilbo reports that searches for one Seongsu fruit-mochi brand jumped 2,800% in three months and that posts about “waiting three hours” are common.
- Korean-style experience. At Hanjungsun, staff wear hanbok and gift sets are wrapped in hanji paper and bojagi cloth with norigae tassels, turning a snack into a gift and an experience (Harper’s Bazaar Korea; MTN).
- Seasonal flavors. Menus change with the harvest—persimmon, tangerine and fig in autumn, strawberry in winter and spring—so there is always a reason to return.
- An affordable luxury. At ₩3,500–6,500 a piece, it feels special without costing as much as a cake. Even teenagers travel from other cities to buy it, according to Segye Ilbo.

How Big Is the Fruit Mochi Boom? The Numbers
- GS25’s Hanjungsun yogurt rice cake (₩3,900), launched September 3, 2026, sold about 600,000 units in roughly a month—about ₩2.34 billion in sales (MTN, October 2, 2026).
- At Hanjungsun’s Lotte World Mall store, a reporter who joined the waitlist 10 minutes after opening got number 220; by mid-afternoon the waitlist had passed 1,100 (MTN).
- Google search interest for “chapssal-tteok” rose from 6 in mid-July to 80 in early October 2026 (Segye Ilbo).

Tips for Buying and Eating Fruit Mochi
- Eat it the same day. Fresh fruit and cream don’t keep well; refrigerate and eat within a few hours.
- Bring a cold bag. Hanjungsun sells one for ₩2,000 and recommends it for trips longer than three hours.
- Go on a weekday morning. Weekend queues at Seongsu and department-store branches can stretch for hours, and popular flavors sell out early.
- Cut, then snap. Use a clean knife to slice it in half for the classic cross-section photo.

FAQ: Korean Fruit Mochi
Is Korean fruit mochi the same as Japanese daifuku?
It is similar. Korean fruit chapssal-tteok follows the same idea of fruit inside a rice cake, but Korean shops add local twists such as yogurt cream, persimmon, Dubai-style pistachio filling and Korean-style gift wrapping.
How much does fruit mochi cost in Seoul?
About ₩3,500–6,500 per piece at specialty shops in 2026, ₩3,900 for the GS25 convenience store version, and ₩32,000–45,000 for gift sets.
Where is the most popular fruit mochi in Seoul?
Hanjungsun’s Seongsu flagship and department-store branches have the longest queues. Hongmandang in Myeongdong and Seongsu-dong Sujae Mochi are easier alternatives.
How long does fruit mochi last?
Because it contains fresh fruit and cream, it is best eaten the same day and kept cool.
