Mungyeong Saejae in Autumn: Best Trip from Seoul 2026

Mungyeong Saejae in autumn: red and yellow foliage around a wooden bridge in the valley

Mungyeong Saejae in autumn is one of the easiest ways to walk straight into Korea’s fall colors without climbing a summit. A flat, 6.5 km dirt road runs through three Joseon-era stone gates in a maple-lined valley, and from October 17 to November 1, 2026 the same park hosts the Mungyeong Apple Festival. With the KTX-Eum now running from Pangyo in about 1 hour 34 minutes, it works as a relaxed day trip from Seoul.

Why Visit Mungyeong Saejae in Autumn 2026

Mungyeong Saejae (“the bird pass”) was the main road between Seoul and the southeastern Yeongnam region for centuries. Scholars walked it on the way to the royal civil-service exam, and the three fortified gates (Juheulgwan, Jogokgwan and Joryeonggwan) are designated Historic Site No. 147. Today the old road is a free provincial park: the trail is mostly packed earth, gently uphill, and many visitors walk it barefoot.

  • Foliage timing: Weather i’s 2026 forecast (Sep 4) puts peak color in the central inland region around October 31–November 5. In the Saejae valley, color usually builds through late October, so the last week of October and the first days of November are the safest bet.
  • Apple season: The 2026 Mungyeong Apple Festival runs October 17 (Sat) to November 1 (Sun) in the park, near the First Gate, with an apple market, tastings, photo zones and orchard picking (picking is paid and arranged per orchard).
  • Popular for a reason: Mungyeong city counted about 4.05 million visitors to Saejae in 2025, and about 1.53 million by late May 2026, up 29.3% year on year.
