Daedunsan in Autumn: Best Foliage Trip from Seoul 2026

Daedunsan in autumn: Geumgang Cloud Bridge spanning rocky peaks with red foliage

Daedunsan in autumn is one of the most dramatic foliage scenes in Korea: hundreds of granite spires rise out of slopes of red and orange maples, linked by a swaying suspension bridge 80 m above the valley and a near-vertical staircase to the summit. Nicknamed the “Geumgangsan of Honam,” the 878 m mountain sits on the border of Wanju (Jeollabuk-do) and Nonsan and Geumsan (Chungcheongnam-do), and a cable car takes you most of the way up in five minutes. This 2026 guide covers peak dates, how to get there from Seoul, cable car fares, costs, an itinerary and where to eat.

Why Visit Daedunsan in Autumn (2026 Peak Timing)

The contrast between grey rock and fiery leaves is what makes Daedunsan special in autumn. Foliage-tracking site Danpungmap estimates that color began around October 23, 2026 and that the peak falls around November 6, with good color usually lasting about a week either side. For comparison, the Korea Forest Service forecast put nearby Naejangsan’s peak on November 4 this year (Maeil Shinmun, Oct 9, 2026). In other words, the first two weeks of November are the sweet spot for Daedunsan in autumn.

The best light comes early: on the expected peak day, sunrise is around 06:58 and sunset around 17:32, and backlit leaves glow most in the first and last hour of sun. Weekends in early November are busy, so a weekday visit or an early start pays off.

How to Get to Daedunsan from Seoul

Daedunsan has no direct express bus from Seoul, so most visitors go through Daejeon.

  • KTX + taxi (fastest, about 2–2.5 hours): KTX from Seoul Station to Daejeon Station takes about 1 hour, with around 105 trains a day from 05:03 to 23:28. The standard fare is ₩23,700 (Korea Charts, Oct 2026). From Daejeon, Daedunsan is about 40 minutes by car (Daedunsan Cable Car official site). A taxi costs roughly ₩45,000–55,000 one way (our estimate), so this works best for groups of two to four.
  • KTX + local buses (cheapest): From Daejeon Seonambu Bus Terminal, take Daejeon’s village bus 34 to the Daedunsan Natural Recreation Forest (Baetije rest area). Then take Wanju’s circular bus 300 or walk 2.3 km (30–40 minutes) to the park entrance. Buses are infrequent, so check times with Daejeon and Wanju county transport offices before you go (official site guidance).
  • Via Nonsan: Nonsan Terminal also has city buses toward Daedunsan (Danpungmap). This is handy if you are combining the trip with Gwanchoksa Temple.
  • By car: from Seoul, take the Gyeongbu Expressway → Biryong JC → Pangam IC → Nam-Daejeon IC → Chubu IC → Boksu → Jinsan → Daedunsan (about 2 h 30 min without traffic).

Daedunsan Cable Car, Cloud Bridge and Samseon Stairs

  • Cable car: 927 m line at a 23° gradient, 50-person cabins, about 5 minutes to the upper station. It runs 09:00–17:50, and ticket sales close 20 minutes earlier. There are no reservations: tickets are sold on site in order, and service stops in strong wind or lightning. The 2026 round-trip fare is ₩16,500 for adults and ₩13,000 for children (Maeil Shinmun Oct 2026; Danpungmap).
  • Geumgang Cloud Bridge (금강구름다리): 5–10 minutes from the upper station, this suspension bridge is 48 m long and 80 m high. It first opened in 1985 as Korea’s first mountain suspension bridge and was rebuilt after 2021.
  • Samseon Stairs (삼선계단): 127 steel steps at a 51° angle up a rock pillar. The stairs are one-way and not for anyone with a fear of heights.
  • Macheondae summit (878 m): the round trip from the cable car via the bridge and stairs takes about 1.5–2 hours. Hiking from the car park instead takes 3–4 hours round trip (Telltrip, 2026).
